Quiz Bio: Kate Chase Sprague

Kate Chase Sprague (13 Aug 1840 – 31 Jul 1899) was a visionary. The daughter of Salmon P. Chase, she served as his primary political aid. Kate and her father, though they got along, battled for attention. Kate helped him speedily rise to the top from Cincinnati lawyer to national positions of power, though she never could get him the ultimate position of President of the United States, no matter how hard she tried. She managed to turn down John Hay, Lincoln’s personal secretary (who was devastated), and made Mary Todd Lincoln so mad, that Mary stopped the band from playing when she saw Kate dancing with Abe. To note, Abe was at her wedding and Mary was not. After a rocky marriage, Kate died living with her daughter, feeding chickens in the back yard.
