E. Lucy Braun (19 Apr 1889 – 05 Mar 1971) was one of the foremost scientists in botany. Her mother, Emma Moriah (Wright) Braun, started her on the path. From UC, Lucy earned a bachelor’s degree in botany and geology in 1910, a master’s degree in geology in 1912, and a PhD in botany in 1914. Lucy explored the hills of Appalachia during the Prohibition, earning the trust of illegal moonshiners. Heavily published, Lucy specialized in deciduous forest ecosystems.
